Both acclaimed violinist Ann Marie Simpson-Einziger and founding Incubus guitarist Mike Einziger have long been fascinated by science. Ann Marie majored in biology at UVA and then taught physics and chemistry, while Mike studied it at Harvard.
Therefore, Ann Marie became quite curious when, while on tour in 2016, she experienced a benign skin ailment that caused lighter spots of skin on her back. Could the cause be utilized to purposefully lessen the appearance of dark spots on the face? Over the course of six years, the couple and their group of top scientists discovered the power of malassezin, a chemical that is naturally present on skin. Through the use of biotechnology, they were able to produce Malassezin again and use it to create a ground-breaking serum.
